About Us 2

WHO WE ARE

The Irish Family History Forum is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the study of Irish genealogy and family history. The IFHF, also referred to as The Forum, was founded in 1991 to support those interested in researching their Irish ancestry. Although the Forum is based on Long Island, outside of New York City, our members include both amateur and professional genealogists from across the country and around the world..

At the Forum, we focus on:

  • Promoting interest in Irish genealogy, with an emphasis on family history and traditions.
  • Disseminating relevant genealogical and historical knowledge through our award-winning quarterly Newsletter, monthly meetings (in person and remotely via Zoom), and occasional special events
  • Encouraging a sense of community through our meetings, our annual Christmas party, and special events, such as walking tours and archive visits.

WHAT WE OFFER

If you are interested in researching your Irish heritage, please join us.  We provide our members with tools and resources to help guide their research.

Meetings. The Forum’s meetings, which typically feature lectures on genealogical, historical, or cultural topics, are held on the third Saturday of each month (September to June, except for December). Whenever possible, these meetings are held in a hybrid fashion—in person and via Zoom.

The in-person portion of our program starts at 10 a.m. (ET), allowing members to gather for light refreshments, meet with other members, and get advice from Ask the Experts, a panel of experienced genealogists. The formal meeting then begins at 10:45 a.m. For members unable to attend in person, the presentation is available via Zoom beginning at 10:45a.m. (ET).

Meeting Format:

Refreshment Break
Meet and socialize with other members.

Ask the Experts
This is an opportunity to meet one-on-one
with an experienced genealogist to ask a
basic genealogy question.

Speaker

speakers on various topics of interest
to our members.

Check our Calendar  for information about upcoming meetings and events.

You can also visit us on Facebook.

The Monthly Meeting Link on our Member Resources page provides the date, time, and location of our meetings, as well as Zoom registration details. In addition, an email with a registration link is sent to all members a week before the meeting.

When permitted by the presenter, the presentation is recorded and available in the Webinar section of our Member Resources page.

Quarterly Newsletter. Members can receive the award-winning Newsletter of the Irish Family History Forum in either digital or print format. Members are encouraged to submit articles on aspects of their family history, as well as genealogy news, book recommendations, and research tips. Using our Newsletter Archives, members can view past issues, published from 2013 to the present, while our Newsletter Articles Index allows them to easily search for a specific topic or by author’s name.

Irish Genealogy Research Guide. Members can take advantage of our online Irish Genealogy Research Guide, a step-by-step manual on tracing one’s Irish ancestors.

Surname Database. Members can add ancestral names to our Surname Database and exchange information on family surnames or locations of common interest with other Forum members.

Library Resources. The John Rowane Memorial Library at the FamilySearch Center in Plainview, New York, includes more than 500 items of general and Irish-related genealogical significance. Members can also use our Irish Research Collection in the reference room at the Bethpage Public Library in Bethpage, New York. An index to these collections can be accessed by clicking on Library in the Resources section.
